Maya Tselios received the PHSA+ Volunteer Award that recognizes an individual who has volunteered their time, skills and expertise to support patients, families, and communities across B.C.
Since joining BC Children's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre (C&W) as a volunteer in May 2022, Maya has generously contributed over 400 hours of her time. Much of that time has been spent in the Sibling Support Centre, which provides a safe play setting for siblings who are on campus while their brother or sister is in or receiving care.
Her colleagues share that she exudes positivity and reassurance in her volunteer role and naturally earns the trust of those she interacts with, creating an environment of safety and joy for children, families, and staff.
"In the presence of children, Maya's warmth and enthusiasm create an environment of comfort, safety, and joy," raves leadership in the Sibling Support Centre. "Through her volunteer work, Maya has created unforgettable memories, gained valuable experiences, and forged lasting friendships – she exemplifies the qualities of an extraordinary individual dedicated to making a difference."
BC Children's holds a special place in in Maya's heart and in the heart of her family.
"My brother was a patient here, having a high-risk surgery at the age of two," recalls Maya. "While my family will always be grateful for the amazing doctor who saved my brother's life, we all have sweet memories of the volunteers who supported us and comforted my brother by reading stories and playing with bubbles, making him laugh just moments before the surgery."
Maya aspires to make the same impact in her role as a volunteer. When asked about the most rewarding part of volunteering, Maya first thought is of others.
"It's all about the smiles on faces from the kids I interacted with," she says. "It's really liberating to just be silly for an entire shift. If I can get a kid I'm working with to just explode in giggles, I know I've done something right."
Congratulations to Maya on her Volunteer PHSA+ Award!
The PHSA+ Awards are part of an internal recognition program that celebrates teams and individuals who bring our purpose, vision, values and Coast Salish teachings to life in the workplace. They go above and beyond to serve patients and families across B.C.
