New Employees

We know you have a lot of questions about your first day, your first week, and even your first month with us. This section is dedicated to providing you with everything you need to know.

PHSA is dedicated to keeping each of its employees safe and healthy. Before you begin any work, you are required to read the following document as part of your Safety Orientation. Your Hiring Manager will discuss all required safety training once you start.

Your Health and Safety Responsibilities (PDF, 7KB)

All new PHSA & program employees attend an orientation as soon as possible after starting work. The orientation will provide an overview of PHSA and give more in-depth information about your program or department and your place of work. It is also an opportunity to meet your colleagues and to ask any questions that will help you feel settled in your role.‎

All new PHSA employees need to report their vaccination status, per the Baseline Immunity Assessment Program.  This helps in maintaining the health and safety within PHSA for all employees and the populations they provide care to.

Employees can submit their vaccination status by using the Vaccination Status Self-Reporting Tool

Once submitted, a Nurse at the Provincial Workplace Health Contact Centre (PWHCC) will review vaccination records, and recommendations if necessary will be provided back to the employee.

If you are unable to use the online tool or do not have records, email the Provincial Workplace Health Contact Centre (PWHCC).

If you have been asked to complete a criminal record check as a condition of employment, please ensure you have your identity verified through the online Electronic Identity Verification (EIV) process. In order to qualify to submit a consent to a criminal record check online, applicants must have an activated mobile BC Services Card.

All individuals are responsible for the cost of obtaining a Criminal Record Check. The fee is no longer deducted from your employee paycheque, as payments are processed by credit card online.

For all inquiries, please email criminalrecordcheck@phsa.ca.

As part of your orientation, please read through the required PHSA-wide policies. The policies can be found on the PHSA Professional ConductCorporate Governance, and Influenza Prevention pages. Here is a list of the required PHSA policies:

Your new hire package will include a policy agreement which you are required to sign indicating that you have read and agree to all of these policies.

If you are eligible for relocation assistance, please request the reimbursable expenses guidelines from your hiring manager. The guidelines are located on POD (PHSA on Demand Intranet).

Depending on your employment status, PHSA provides employees with a wide variety of benefits, including:

  • Health benefits, such as: Medical Services Plan, dental, extended health, life insurance, accidental death & dismemberment, and long-term disability
  • Pension plan (if eligible: inquire with your leader regarding which pension plan applies to you, i.e.: municipal, public service, etc.)
  • Vacation and other paid and unpaid leaves

If you are eligible, you will need to complete and return a number of forms related to your compensation and benefits. All forms are referred to in the Employment Package Checklist, which you should receive as part of your new hire package. When you send your completed new hire package back, please include a copy of your Social Insurance Card (SIN Card) along with a VOID cheque for direct deposit purposes, so you can be paid in a timely manner.

If you would like more information or require assistance, please contact the Benefits Support Line: 604-297-8683 or 1-866-875-5306 or Email: employeeRBsupport@phsa.ca.

Dress code varies depending on your location, work group and discipline. If you are a corporate services employee, please check with your hiring manager as dress code may vary depending on your location. If you work in a clinical unit, please inquire with your hiring manager regarding specific dress and scent protocol.

When in a hospital setting, you must wear closed-toe and closed-back footwear. Please ensure you read the Personal Protective Equipment form before you start work (may not apply to all employees).

In general, parking at most PHSA facilities is limited. We strongly encourage employees to use alternative and healthy methods of transportation, including public transit, walking or cycling. If you do intend to drive, please allow some additional time to locate parking. Ensure you review the "Maps & Floor Plans" section of our Intranet POD (PHSA on Demand) during your first week of work in order to become familiar with the various locations.

Using the PHSA/program address for the site you are going to, you can find:

If you're concerned that you may require a vehicle for travelling to other PHSA/program sites, please note that inter-hospital shuttles operate between some PHSA sites.

Our programs and services serve the entire province of British Columbia and are focused on the following specific populations with specialized care needs:

  • Patients with heart disease
  • Patients with kidney disease
  • Patients with mental health and addictions
  • Patients requiring organ transplants
  • Patients with a communicable disease

and more!

In addition, we have been given the mandate by the provincial government to collaborate with health care providers and other stakeholders to find province-wide solutions for other health concerns.

At PHSA, we are committed to creating an environment where:

  • You can do your best every day
  • You can voice your ideas and solutions
  • You are listened to and your opinions matter
  • You feel respected
  • You know the work you do makes a difference
  • You feel engaged and empowered at work
  • You actively encourage others to join PHSA

We also empower employees to redesign their work processes to reduce waste and improve patient safety, quality and outcomes. We are working toward the kind of long-term cultural growth that will result in all our dedicated medical and non-medical personnel contributing to, seeking out and implementing better processes, which will continually drive out waste and improve efficiency. Through these efforts, we are not only reducing costs, but we are building on our reputation of providing a higher quality of care for our patients.
