The Indigenous employee experience team, part of PHSA's Sanya’k̓ula team, is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for Indigenous staff, prioritizing their well-being through various initiatives such as providing crucial support for those facing harm, cultivating an Indigenous employee network, organizing gatherings like the Indigenous Community of Practice, and amplifying Indigenous voices through a bimonthly internal newsletter. The team's approach reflects a commitment to inclusivity, equity, respect and recognition of First Nations Title & Rights and Indigenous Human Rights, the team strives to foster a workplace culture where Indigenous employees feel valued and supported.

"Our team walks alongside the Indigenous employees at PHSA throughout their experiences—whether they're facing racism, discrimination, or seeking support," says Michele van der Wielen, Director of Sanya’k̓ula. "This work is key to ensuring Indigenous employees not only survive but thrive within a strong network of Indigenous colleagues and the broader, vibrant PHSA community".

"This small team creates open channels for Indigenous employees to address workplace racism, actively listening and responding to concerns. They confront Indigenous-specific racism openly, validating experiences and championing changes to policies. Their dedication ensures all employees feel valued and respected, fostering a just and equitable environment."

"The work that the Indigenous employee experience team is doing is so important," says Darian Nyuli, who is also part of Sanya’k̓ula and leads the Indigenous recruitment team. "We spend so much time at work, and having access to safe spaces to connect and share with others really makes a difference for mental health and wellbeing. This work is part of the foundation for creating a truly equitable, safe environment for all."

"I feel grateful to be part of this team and the meaningful work we do," Michele shares. "My hope is that everything we accomplish today will positively shape the experiences of staff in the future. Being involved in work that is truly transforming the system is deeply fulfilling."

Thank you to the Sanya’k̓ula team for their dedication to enhancing the workplace at PHSA for Indigenous staff. We appreciate the impact you have made on your colleagues, patients and the organization as a whole. Congratulations!
